Geovisualizaton Portfolio

As an environmental geographer with a passion for the deep sea, I

believe our world's greatest mysteries are still waiting to be discovered.

Currently, I am attending the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in

pursuit of my Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Environmental Studies as

well as a certification in Geographic Information Systems. This major has

allowed me to learn about the environmental systems that make our planet

function and develop proficiencies in GIS software, such as ArcGIS and

TerrSet.Presently, I am focusing on learning coding in Python and R to

elevate my capabilities in mapping and processing GIS data. During my

college career, I have also been allowed the opportunity to attend Stony

Brook University Southampton for a semester in order to focus on ocean

studies. During this semester I assisted in the Gobler laboratory, processing

water samples to monitor harmful algal blooms. Additionally, I served as a

deckhand aboard the university’s research vessels to aid in ocean station

sampling. I believe that with the knowledge gained from these studies, in

addition to the skills developed in my major, I will be able to pursue a future

career in deep ocean mapping and conservation.

In an effort to achieve this career, I intend to start by working with

NOAA in the role of Hydrographic Survey Technician. The work happening in

NOAA’s hydrographic survey is setting the standard for what global sea floor

research should look like and their Survey Technicians are leading the data

collection for that research. While there are certain specific activities in the

role that I have not performed before, my knowledge of both fieldwork and

in-lab operations coupled with my extensive experience leading teams in the

private sector would allow me to pick up these specialties efficiently. My

passion for this field and willingness to learn more every day make me a

valuable team member and I look forward to continually uncovering the

wonderful things that our planet has to offer.
